Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to those in the construction field who have life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and obtained his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil suffered a major stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the stroke left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, causing financial tension on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the device in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could figure out how to use it.

Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the wonderful grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
